Scavenger Hunt Sunday 07.28.13

Time once again for Scavenger Hunt Sunday ... this time inspired by Ashley's dreams of cooler weather.   :)
{cool colors}

We had fun playing with glow sticks at the drive in the other night and ended up with some cool colors.  This is one of Alex's creations.

A bug was hiding from the rain in the leaves of our little tree.

I found a good recipe for a sweet, low calorie treat.  It consists of 3/4 cup vanilla almond milk, 1.5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, stevia for some added sweetness, and 4-6 ice cubes.  Blend all together in a blender and you have a refreshing, iced beverage.

It hasn't been all that hot this week, but that didn't stop Alex from cooling off on the swings while we played at the park.

{raw}

I made the switch from shooting exclusively jpeg ... to jpeg and raw ... to just raw over the past couple years.  What does that have to do with this spiderweb photo?  Nothing really.  Although I did shoot it in raw.  :)

Thanks for stopping by!  I hope you have a fabulous week!

Week 38 in Pictures

Another busy week checked off the list!  I keep saying that I hope things slow down soon ... and I'm saying it again this week!  I'm trying really hard to keep some open days/times on my calendar over the next month or so.  I need a break!  Too many books partially read, too  many photos left unedited, too many closets not cleaned out ... the list could go on and on.  In fact, it never seems to end.  :)  Oh, and my nine-year-old told me last week that I never spend any time with him unless it is doing homework.  That's not entirely true, but that doesn't really make me feel any better about the things that are keeping me busy.

I did manage to take a photo almost every day this week despite the busyness.  I only cheated on one.

I'm not sure what kind of butterfly this is.  Some kind of fritillary perhaps?  Whatever it was, it was enjoying our garden.

My church bought a Silhouette Cameo die-cutting machine for our Children's Ministries (at my suggestion).  It will really help with some projects we have coming up.  It currently resides at my house - I'm the only one who knows how to use it and I'm using it for our Wednesday night kids' classes right now - but I have to keep reminding myself that it doesn't belong to me.  :)

This handsome fella picked a cold, rainy day to emerge from his chrysalis.  So I took him outside for some photos (notice the rain drops on the sunflower petals) then brought him back inside where he spent the night in our luxurious butterfly house.  :)  We set him free on Wednesday when the weather was much better.

This is my cheat day.  I was so busy preparing for Wednesday night kids' classes at church AND open house at the boys' school, that I don't think I even touched my camera.  So this photo is from Tuesday - the cold, rainy day of the week.  Keira noticed this rain-covered spiderweb for me.

I had never tried to get any macro photos of the Monarch butterflies we raise until now.  This beautiful lady picked a gorgeous day to emerge, so I took some time to enjoy the sunshine with her before she flew away.

Today's photo should be of Keira, the birthday girl.  She's now 14.  Yikes!  How did that happen?  But we never got a chance to take her picture.  Hopefully one day this week we will.  Instead you get yet another butterfly.  This one is a clouded sulphur.  Nick caught it and brought it to me.  (Yes, my children are well-trained when it comes to stuff like this.  They know and often embrace my photography obsession.)  The colors in the palette are all from the butterfly.  Surprising, isn't it?

One of the other things keeping me busy this week was preparing for a friend's baby shower.  She's actually having her fourth child, but it is her first girl.  So that's reason to celebrate.  I was so busy helping at the shower that I didn't even pick up my camera until it was over.  So I scrambled to try to get at least a few photos.  I got a few strange looks when I got down on the floor under the balloons to take this photo.

So that's what my week looked like.  I hope you have a wonderful last week of September!

Week 35 in Pictures

Here we are again ... another week has flown by.  The kids started school this week, so we are all adjusting to our new schedules.  I have my days to myself now that all three kids are in school all day this year.  It is taking some getting used to.  Although I haven't really been home long enough to get used to it as I've been helping my friend, Laura, clean her new house so they can paint before they move in.  It has been fun and I look forward to helping more this week.

I'm also excited about Bible study starting this week.  Some other things on this week's agenda include: getting my car fixed and hopefully inspected, our first PTO meeting of the school year, and our church's Fall Kickoff party.  Looks like another busy week!

I am totally cheating on this photo.  (I don't know why I always feel obligated to confess.)  :)  This is from a few weeks ago.  Apparently I was all camera'd out from our fun weekend to even pick up the camera.  Anyway, this bee was keeping dry from the rain on one of our sunflowers this particular day.

The kids and I enjoyed a morning walk on the bike trail and came across this cool spider web.  I love how the sun brings out all those yummy colors!

2012-08-28
We cheated a little and took back-to-school photos the evening before school started.  I figured that way we'd be less rushed and it would be less hectic.  I was pleasantly surprised by how well the kids cooperated.  :)  And since I have to be fair, I created a collage with all three kids in it.

On this day, the first day of school for my offspring, this handsome fellow decided to join us and emerge from his chrysalis.  He didn't emerge until the afternoon right before the kids got home from school.

This sweet little thang emerged in the morning in the car on the way to Laura's house where I was going to help her clean.  Laura's new house has all these Morning Glories in the back, so I had a flower to put her on so I could keep busy with scrubbing walls and stuff.

I took this for the Scavenger Hunt prompt, toys.  We have plenty of LEGOs around our house these days.  It is interesting to see what kinds of things Nick builds.

Throw a few frogs and guppies in there (that didn't get photographed) and you've got yourself a really good day.  If you're a kid.  Or a kid's photographer-type mom.  :)

Still looking for votes!  If you haven't already, please head over and vote for my photo.  Please? and Thank you!  :)

Hello!  Happy Monday!  It is a gorgeous day here in Western PA!  I hope it is beautiful where you are too!

Remember this photo that Courtney picked as her favorite in the July Still Life Standouts photography challenge?
July 25

Well, now all nine of the finalists have been chosen and it is time to vote.   So if you wouldn't mind, please head over to either Courtney's, Branson's, or Courtney's and place your vote (preferably for me).  :)

I will warn you, it is very hard to pick a favorite, because all the winner's photos are wonderful.  But the good news is, you can choose your three favorites.

Thanks for taking the time to go look and vote!

Photo of the Day: October 3

October 3
ISO 400, f/9, 1/160s, 18-55mm lens w/10x macro filter on Nikon D40
I think I mentioned how cold and rainy it has been here the past few days.  Well, this afternoon the sun kept peeking out in all its glory from behind some passing clouds.  It was still chilly, but nice enough to get outside and search for something to photograph.  When I walked down to get the boys off the bus, I noticed these gladiolus flowers are starting to bloom on my bank.  Better late than never, right?

As I approached them, I saw that this teeny tiny spider had spun her web on them.  I spent quite a bit of time trying to photograph her.  Macro photography is hard enough, but throw in a couple rambunctious boys and a dog trying to get my attention, and the occasional breeze ... well it is nearly impossible then!

I'm sure the people passing by in their cars thought I was crazy to have my camera inches away from that flower.  If only they could see what I was seeing.  :)
