Photo of the Day: August 27

August 27
ISO 200, f/6.3, 1/100s, 18-55mm lens on Nikon D40
On yesterday's hike we came across a millipede.  At first the kids were afraid to touch it.  But when I assured them that it wouldn't bite (like centipedes do), Keira finally decided to go ahead and check it out.  Well, as you can see, it ended up coming home with us.  In fact, a few minutes after finding this lovely lady (we think it is a female), we found a second one.  So now Keira and Nick each have a new critter to take care of.  (Alex didn't want any part of them).  And since we haven't had any luck finding Monarch caterpillars this summer, our bug boxes needed some occupants.

After researching how to care for millipedes, we filled the bug boxes up half way with moss so they could burrow and gave them each a cucumber slice to eat.  Keira's loved the cucumber and ate almost the whole thing by the time we got up this morning.  Nick's didn't eat any of it that we could see.  So we're trying broccoli today.  Nick seems to think she's nibbled it a little.

They are a lot of fun to handle.  They just keep those little legs moving all the time.  That actually made it quite difficult to get a good photo.  But they tickle while they are crawling on you, which is really cool.

The only problem is that Honey, our golden retriever, seems to be a little jealous that Melody and Marissa (that's what they named them) are getting so much attention.  :)

YIKES! I've never thought to pick one of those guys up... they're so creepy looking and BIG!! LOVE how you've focused this on the lil' legs. Not sure I could get my kiddos to pick one up... they'd be with your Alex!
