My review:
The second half of this book is very much a page turner. I had a hard time putting it down. But you must be patient to get to the second half. The first half of the book is a bit slow. I found it difficult to hold my interest. Once I got about half way through though, I truly enjoyed the story and couldn't wait to read more.
The story takes place in 18th century Scotland and as such is written in a sometimes-hard-to-understand dialect. Fortunately there is a glossary in the back of the book. Unfortunately I didn't discover it until I was done reading. :) The characters are fascinating, the story well written. I will say that there's not a great deal of happiness in this book. In fact, quite the opposite. Although I found myself becoming emotionally attached to Elisabeth, the main character, wishing for some happiness to come upon her. I also found myself annoyed at her spoiled, pampered sister-in-law and sometimes her mother-in-law as well.
I will most certainly read the next book in the series, Mine Is the Night, as I would love to know what becomes of Elisabeth.
