Shoot & Edit: Before & After

You might remember I decided to do this Shoot & Edit challenge this week.  (If not, here's the post where I announced it.)  If I'm going to learn, I need to practice.  Sometimes in order to practice, I need to have a reason.  Other than just the vague "I really should".  :)

Now that Thursday has arrived, I have done my editing and am ready to show off what I've learned.

Here is my SOOC shot ...

It has a very blue cast to it.  My white balance was set to Auto.  Probably not the best choice.  But depending on the time of day, I can't always get a custom white balance set on my camera.  Remember, I'm still learning.

Here's my own edit ...
In Adobe Camera Raw I adjusted the white balance, exposure, recovery, blacks, fill light, clarity, and vibrance.  Then in PSE6 I cropped it slightly, adjusted the sharpness, and resized it for web viewing.

I then went back and followed Ashley's editing tips and this is what I got ...
Much thanks to Ashley for posting her tips!
Not much difference between mine and hers.  She had a few more steps than I did.  I followed them as best I could.  Remember, I am at level zero.  :)

Here are all 3 for comparison ...

I definitely prefer the warmer photos over the SOOC one.

This was a fun learning experience for me.  I can't wait to see what else Jill and Ashley have in store for us!  Next week's theme is "What says Good Morning to you?"  Hmmm.  Anyone want to take a picture of me sleeping in?  'Cuz that's my idea of a good morning.  :)

Really great work and you're right..the differences are very subtle. My guess is that the only significant difference is the high pass filter? Great work!

Great edits. So much cleaner and the red really pops. :)

I find that I have to edit just like you when it comes to taking snow shots - mine are always that bit too blue. There is only a slight difference between your edit and Ashley's.

Beautiful edits! I find that I forget to change my white balance outside sometimes too and end up with blue! You've really warmed it up & made it lovely!

Great edit. That is a good idea to do a 3 comparison.

Wow. What a beautiful shot...and what a difference after Photoshop. Its amazing to see the details in those trees...and you're right, not a huge difference between yours and Ashley's. That means you're getting better!
