eleven

On Sunday, April 13, 2003, at 1:45 a.m., our Nicholas came into the world.  The only ones present during his birth were my husband Doug, our daughter Keira who was 4 1/2 at the time, my mom, Lori my midwife, and Michelle my nurse.  It was a peaceful birth, especially when compared to Keira's entry into the world.  But that's a story for another day.

Here are a couple shots of Nick - pre-digital/scanned in.  I think my husband took this one???  Minutes after his arrival.  Being held by my mom, the proud grandma.

And I believe I took this one (also pre-digital/scanned in).  It was also long before I knew how to use my camera or much about photography.  Or at least I had forgotten everything I had known.  :)

So on Sunday, April 13, 2014, at 1:45 a.m. this wonderful boy got just a little closer to manhood.  He is now 11.  

Eleven.  

E L E V E N!!!  

How can that be?!  I'm convinced that time goes by faster once you have kids.

I talked him into letting me snap a few photos of him on his birthday.  We didn't have much time so we just did them in the back yard where the grass was still brownish and no leaves were on the trees yet.  Hey, I'll take what I can get when it comes to him.  At least he wasn't yelling "paparazzi" and running away!  :)

The following is what ensued ... trying to get at least once decent shot of the elusive Nick.

    

    

His personality shines through in his photos.  A little bit goofball.  Pre-teen attitude.  Jokester.  Lots of fun to be around.

I'm so proud of him and the young man he is becoming.

Michael ~ One Year Old

This sweet little guy turned one recently.  He's not your typical one year old.  His grandmother, who asked me to do his pictures, said he may have cerebral palsy.  He was to visit the doctor soon after his session.

He was such a sweetheart.  And even though I couldn't get a smile out of him, I really enjoyed our time together.  Here are just a few shots from his session ...

He wasn't able to sit up by himself so his grandmother held him up.  Which required lots of editing - not something I'm used to.  But it was worth it to get her a photo of him on a hay bale - something she wanted.

He was fascinated by the hay bale.  He kept pulling strands out and examining it.  Then he'd drop that and grab another.  It was fun to see the wonder of something new through his eyes.

We didn't get to do all that I had planned for his session because he decided to take a nap.  Must be nice.  :)

Project 52 - Week 42

I won't bore you with telling you how busy last week was.  Because they've all been busy lately!  Mostly fun stuff though, which is good.  Instead I'll show you some of what kept me busy.  Here are a few photos from the sessions I did last week.

Sunday afternoon I photographed this lovely family.  Nikki and I have known each other for years and when she asked me to take their family photos, I was so excited.  And nervous.  Funny how I get nervous photographing people I know and not so much with strangers.  :)  We had fun though.

Monday I taught part two of a photography workshop.  This was a follow up session where the ladies could practice what I had taught them in part one.  Nick agreed to come model for us.  He did a good job.

Alyssa was also our model.  She's such a natural in front of the camera and I just love photographing her.  We have plans for more fun photo shoots.  We just need to make the time to do them.

On Friday I photographed this little guy.  He's turning one in a couple weeks and his grandmother wanted to surprise his mom with photos.  Developmentally he's not where most 1 year olds would be, more like 4-5 months, so I didn't have to chase him around or anything.  He pretty much stayed where we put him.  :)  He was a real sweetie.  

Friday afternoon I photographed an adorable couple.  They were married last November but didn't hire a photographer for their very small wedding.  The bride regretted that and was referred to me by a friend.  So they got all dressed up in their dress and suit and we had a blast taking pictures.  She had a lot of great ideas and was open to my suggestions which made them really easy to work with.  They even drove their 1982 Porsche to get some photos in/with.  Nick, who was my assistant, loved the car.  He loved their dog (whom they also brought along to be in some photos) even more though.  They wore each other out running around together.  The bride requested that I not share any of the photos online, and as much as it pains me not to :), I must honor that request.  So you'll just have to take my word for it that I got some really great shots.  ;)

Saturday morning, after a very rainy night,  I photographed Jason for his senior portraits.  It was a damp, chilly morning, but we still had a good time.  He was also pretty easy to work with and had some great ideas of his own.

I have two more seniors to shoot this week and a couple more sessions in the works and then I might get a break.  I've really been enjoying myself but I have so much editing to do, I feel guilty doing anything else.  Like writing this blog post.  :)  Which is why I need to go now!

Project 52 - Week 21

As I mentioned before, last week was incredibly busy.  But not with things that I would take pictures of.  Like a sick kid, two funerals, and Keira's spring concert in her dark school auditorium - just to name a few.  However, I did get a chance to stretch myself photographically on Friday with a newborn shoot.  I typically shoot outdoors but with a newborn, it is almost necessary to be inside.  Especially on a day when it doesn't quite hit 50 degrees.  I had a fun time preparing for this shoot ... buying fabrics and wraps.  Figuring out backdrops.  I didn't get to use all my ideas because babies don't always fully cooperate, but we did get some shots that I'm sure the mom will love.

I shared a couple in yesterday's Scavenger Hunt.  And here are a few more.

Tamara brought a few outfits for the baby.  We tried to get some sweet naked baby shots at first but quickly discovered that she much preferred being clothed.  So we worked with that.

This is the only shot I got of her wrapped in this scarf.  She didn't stay settled long enough.

I had told Tamara that if she wanted to be in any shots to wear either a plain black or white shirt.  Here the baby is wrapped in her blankie and is very content to sleep in Mama's arms.

I learned a lot during this shoot.  (Like I need elbow and knee pads if I'm going to be crawling around on our hard wood floors.)  And I look forward to getting more opportunities to stretch myself.  Photographically, that is.  :)

Scavenger Hunt Sunday 05.26.13

Hello!  It is time for another Scavenger Hunt.  In all honesty, I didn't take many photos this week.  I attended two funerals and was busy with other things, so my camera got neglected.  Until Friday when I photographed a newborn.  However, despite my camera neglect, only one of my photos this week is from the archives.


{vacation}

Not exactly a vacation, but the kids and I went to a local lake for a few hours last Sunday.  They liked seeing the sailboats out on the water.

Just a snapshot of the jelly jar pies we made for the Staff Appreciation Luncheon we hosted at our school earlier this month.  They were a big hit.

We got to enjoy the sound of Keira's spring concert Thursday evening.  And a miraculous thing happened ... I left my camera in the car and didn't take a single photo!  I never get good shots in the school auditorium anyway.  It was really nice to just sit there and listen to the music.  Keira had a small solo part in one of the songs and did great!

I bought this furry fabric for just this reason ... to photograph this sweet little girl (and hopefully more babies).  She's eight days old in this photo.  Isn't she precious?!

And since I could choose to show anything, I chose to show another one of the baby.
