I decided to go to the gym today. I don’t usually go on Saturday’s because I typically have the kids and the play room isn’t open on weekends. But today Doug was home – taking a couple days off from work. So I did a little shopping … having some much-needed alone time … and afterwards I went to the gym.
I was surprised to find the parking lot of the gym full at 1:30 on a Saturday afternoon. But then I remembered … it is January 2. New Year’s resolutions are in full swing.
The fitness center was equally packed, but I was able to snag the last open crossramp machine (my favorite of choices for a cardio workout). I exercise with my iPod blasting in my ears, but I also watch people a little. There were a few familiar faces, but most people I had never seen before. That doesn’t mean they haven’t been there because I usually go to aerobics, but I suspect many of them were newbies.
When I went to check out at the front desk, I asked the guy if the gym is typically this busy on Saturday’s. He said, “No, it is the New Year’s resolution people. They’re driving me crazy today.”
Me: “So in six weeks or so, it will die down?”
Guy: “More like three. Definitely by the end of January.”
To which we both laughed. Although the more I thought about it, the less funny it became.
How sad that we are all gung-ho on January 1, but by January 31, we’ve run out of steam. Resolutions … good intentions … all but forgotten.
Well, I don’t intend to become one of the 98% of Americans who have given up by the end of January. No. I started my change before January 1 and will continue to work on it until I have met my goal. I will not give up if I mess up. I will burn that bridge and keep moving forward.
“Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things… and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” ~Walt Disney
How about you?

I guess that means if I want a parking spot tomorrow morning and a spot in the back row for aerobics that I should go a little earlier than usual.
Unless the weather remains the same as today, then the kids will probably have a 2-hour delay. Then there will probably be plenty of parking. :)
At least the parking lot and gym won't be as crowded in a month! :)
I wanted to stop by and tell you that I love your barbeque beef recipe. I made it before Thanksgiving for my in-laws and I made it again Christmas eve for my parents and some neighbors. So yummy and easy!
Renee - The parking lot will still be crowded (it always seems to be for some reason), but not as bad. And I'm glad you enjoyed the Bar-B-Q beef! It is a regular in our house! And if you don't eat it all, you can freeze the rest and eat it later (it freezes really well).
I dunno. Most ppl I've read seem to be shying away from the more "traditional" resolutions...just for the sake of making 'em...and they're trying to be more realistic with their goals. Why shud we be governed by the calendar, anyway??
