Weekly Summary ~ 6/28/15 - 7/4/15

I'm a couple weeks behind in posting.  Again.  {sigh}

But we're having a great summer!
Plenty of fun.
Lots of busy.
Hence the lack of blog posts.  :)
Just enjoying life.
I am keeping up with my 365 Photo challenge though.

{June 28: Timeless Beauty}
June 28: Timeless Beauty
I don't know about you, but I think this Black Swallowtail is quite beautiful. Or in this case handsome as it is a male.  :)

{June 29: Let's Go}
June 29: Let's Go
On Friday I said to my husband, "Let's go to Ohio tomorrow to pick up some Monarch eggs and caterpillars." He, knowing how much it meant to me, agreed to drive. We met up with a very generous lady who so graciously shared some of her babies with me. I now have 16 tiny caterpillars and 6 eggs. Late last night 4 eggs hatched and I stayed up to watch 2 of them. This little guy seemed to take forever to chew his way out of his egg. But, tired as I was, I stayed up to witness his entrance into this world. Here's hoping they all make it to butterflydom.  :)

{June 30: Thankful}

June 30: Thankful
Like many I am thankful for many things. My faith, my freedom, my health ... but today especially I am thankful for this crazy crew that I call my family. We spent the day at Idlewild and had a super fun time. We came home exhausted, which means it was a great day! Keira took this picture with her phone since mine was running low on battery and is being used for my pic of the day with her permission.  :)

{July 1: Wonder in the World}

July 1: Wonder in the World
Or in this case, a wonder out of the world. Tonight's full moon is spectacular! Have you seen it? If you missed it, there will be another at the end of July. The only month in 2015 with two full moons.

{July 2: Adventurous}

July 2: Adventurous
The kids and I love to be adventurous and go for walks and hikes to see what we can find. This particular evening Alex and I saw hundreds of these damselflies while out exploring. A few of them were nice enough to be still while I photographed them.

{July 3: Leadership}

July 3: Leadership
Of my three children Keira has the greatest leadership traits. She was born a leader. I can remember when she was in 3rd grade her teacher asked me what her strengths and her weaknesses were. My answer was the same for both. She's a natural born leader, which is a great trait, but that also makes her tend to be bossy and other kids don't like that too much.  :)  She's a great person who has a bright future ahead of her.
This photo was chosen as one of the Top Shots of the day! WOOT!

{July 4: A Reflection of Me}

July 4: A Reflection of Me
If you know me, then you know that I am a butterfly lover. I raise Monarchs every summer and this year am raising Black Swallowtails also. This gorgeous girl decided to arrive today. Our 4th butterfly on the 4th of July.  :)  I have had people tell me that when they see a butterfly, they think of me, so it may be a stretch, but this beauty is a reflection of me.   :)

A rundown of our week:
June 28-30
Nick got home from his Bible Quizzing trip in Boston Sunday night.  He had a good time and earned a silver award.  The quizzers don't compete against each other.  They try to answer the questions as best they can and are basically graded based on their answers.  Nick's voice was very scratchy when he got home so I suspect he was shouting a lot.  :/
Monday the boys had their 6-month dental check ups.  Both got two thumbs up.
Cupcake, one of our Black Swallowtails, decided to join us.  We had kept Rocky a couple days because of the weather and once we set him free, Cupcake eclosed.  He had to stay with us until Wednesday because of the rain.
Keira had a violin lesson Monday evening.
Doug took a vacation day on Tuesday and we spent the day at Idlewild.  We had a great time!  Nick decided to be brave and try riding some things that always frightened him starting with the roller coaster.  Once he got off that first ride, he got right back on.  In fact, the lines were so short that we rode it several times in a row before moving on to other things.  He also road the ferris wheel with me.  He freaked out a little but I helped calm him down.  We prayed and talked about how safe he was and then he was fine.  We even got stopped at the very top and he did great!  It clouded up a couple times and sprinkled on us a little but overall we had a great day.  Not too hot and no downpours.
July 1-4
Wednesday we had an appointment at PA Cyber to get Keira enrolled for the fall.  We had a little trouble finding the place.  We turned at the correct turn but couldn't find the office, so we stopped and asked a woman who was outside having a smoke break.  Turns out we were at the right building, just on the wrong side.  :)
Since we were already in Wexford, we tried to find Trader Joe's which is just down the road a few miles but I went left when I should have gone right and we didn't find it.  And our stupid GPS is no help at all.  I think we need a new one.
On the way back we stopped at Barnes & Noble so the boys could use gift cards that they had.  Oh the drama!  Wanting to buy toys instead of books.  And not having enough for what they wanted.  I'm such a mean mom sometimes.  :)
July 2 was the 30th anniversary of my dad's death.  I shared some pictures on Facebook.  I don't have very many pictures of my dad, so the few that I do have are precious to me.  It is hard to believe that he has been gone for 30 years.
Doug had Friday off for the holiday.  We didn't really do anything.  Puttered around outside.  He pulled weeds in the vegetable gardens and I pulled weeds in my butterfly garden.
On Saturday we were going to visit Doug's parents but they were coming our way anyway, so they visited us instead.  Doug cooked dinner and we had a nice time talking about their upcoming 50th anniversary party.  Pickle, our 4th Black Swallowtail butterfly, had eclosed before they came so I hung onto her until they got here so they could see her.  We set her free shortly after they arrived.
We were going to go see fireworks but everyone wanted to stay close to home.  Our neighbors up the road set them off so we could see them a little.  There are trees in the way.  Honey doesn't like fireworks so she was very close by the whole night.

Weekly Summary ~ 4/26/15 - 5/2/15

First of all, I wanted to mention a giveaway that I am having.  Head over to this blog post to enter for a chance to win the digital download album from Christy Nockels - Let It Be Jesus.  Today is the last day to enter and no one has entered yet.  :(  Which is good for you!

********

May has arrived!  Let the craziness begin!  :)  As we wind down the school year, May always brings with it many last-minute things.  Some fun.  Most fun, actually.  Things like Grandparents' Day, Family Fun Night, and Field Day.  Not to mention Nick's 6th grade celebration at the end of the month.  And Alex's field trip this week.

We also have orchestra concerts, NJHS ceremonies, Mother/Daughter banquets, and prom pictures.  My nieces birthday party is this month also.

I did manage to squeeze in a day at Phipp's Conservatory yesterday with my friend, Sharon.  We met on Facebook, discovered that we lived in the same area and both love photography, so we decided to meet.  We had such a good time yesterday.  We're already planning our next outing.  :)

Anyway, I'm short on time, so I'll get to last week's photos ...

{April 26:  Down}
April 26:  Down
Sometimes it is necessary to get down on the ground to get the photo you have visioned. Yesterday the kids and I volunteered at a local state park pulling an invasive, non-native plant. While in the woods, Keira found these fiddlesticks and called me over as she knew I would be interested in seeing them. My kids are trained well. :) We marked where they were so I could come back with my camera when we were done with our work. They were only a few inches off the ground, so down I went to get my photo. A position I find myself in often in order to "get the shot".

{April 27: Strong}
April 27:  Strong
Bumble bee wings must be pretty strong in order to carry such a large body around.

{April 28:  Weak}
April 28:  Weak
The light from the moon during the day is pretty weak. (I realize the moon doesn't actually give off light, but I had to come up with something for today).  :)

{April 29:  Is}

This is my first butterfly capture (photographically speaking) of the year. It is called an Eastern Comma. Looking forward to many more butterflies this spring/summer!

This guy was flying overhead, probably looking for his next meal.

Nothing too exciting.  Just a plaque I have on my wall and my little mirror hanging under it.  :)

This photo got chosen as one of the Top Shots for the day! WOOT!

Last week I:
Did some more Couch to 5K.  Week 2 is complete.  However, week 3 will probably have to wait until next week.  This one is super busy!
Walked several mornings with my friend, Sam.  I actually ran Monday and Wednesday before she got there and then walked with her for a bit.  I thought that would be better than the other way around.  I wouldn't feel like running after walking 30 minutes with her.  :)
Played in the dirt quite a bit.  Weeding and planting.  Love it!
Had lunch with my friend, Amy, at Rachel's.  It was great getting together with her.
Saturday morning I attended a workshop at a local greenhouse.  Like really local.  Like I walked there.  :)  (Sorry for all the "likes").  Bob, the greenhouse owner/operator, was gracious enough to teach us about flowers and planting and watering/fertilizing.  It was a gorgeous morning!
Went to Preston Park with the boys on Saturday evening.  Even though Nick is still on restriction due to his grades and his 12-year-old-boy attitude :) I wanted to get his pictures taken.  His birthday was April 13 and we hadn't done them yet.
I think that's pretty much it.  It was a great week!

Our Weeks in Review 2014 ~ 11/30-12/13

So, yeah, I missed last week's post.  Doug was on vacation from work and we spent a lot of time shopping.  Not all Christmas shopping though.  We are remodeling our bathroom.  Again.  It was the first room we did when we bought our house 17 years ago and it is due for an update now that the rest of the house is done.  If I wasn't shopping with him, I was shopping with someone else!  :)  I tagged along with some ladies from church to Kraynak's (Christmas and toy store) and Daffin's Candy (chocolate!) again this year.  We went last year and had so much fun, I guess we are making it an annual thing.   We also made some Christmas candy.  Every year the deaconesses at church give out small boxes of candy for Christmas.  It is a lot of work making it but it is fun getting together.  I will probably be helping with that again this week.

Since I didn't post last week, you get bombarded with two week's worth of photos.  Sorry!

{November 30: I bought this!}
November 30: I bought this!
Recently I bought a package of sparkley, glittery washi tape to use in my scrapbooks and for crafting. Because one can never have too much washi tape.  True story.  :)

{December 1: Fruit}
December 1:  Fruit
This is the only sunshine we saw here today.  :)

{December 2: Grass}
December 2:  Grass
Back in July, before the maintenance folks mowed the Far Meadow at our favorite park, Honey had a fun time running through the tall grass.

{December 3: Pop!}
December 3:  Pop!
Alex was excited to finally be able to open this apple-cinnamon lolli-POP from Halloween. I knew we were saving it for a reason.  :)

{December 4: Free}
December 4:  Free
Gazing at the moon is free. However, taking a trip to the moon is anything but. It is estimated that NASA spent $20-$25 billion (in 1969 dollars) sending men to the moon. That would be about $150 billion today. YIKES!

{December 5: Me}
December 5:  Me
Me ... with the birthday boy. Alex turned 9 officially at 5:12 a.m. today. My baby is growing up too fast! {sniff sniff} We got a little silly taking pics with my cell phone.  We were messing with the different modes on my phone. This was taken on "beauty" mode. My skin is not that smooth.  :)
If you missed it, I posted about Alex's ninth birthday.

{December 6: Joy is ...}
December 6:  Joy is ...
Seeing Christmas through the eyes of a child.
Alex was so excited to (finally!) put the tree up today. He helped his dad get it up, string the lights, and put on the star. Then my in-laws came over for a visit, so Alex was even more excited when his grandma helped put ornaments on. He loves having the tree up!

{December 7: Weekends are for ...}
December 7:  Weekends are for ...
Worshiping Jesus and celebrating Christmas with our church family. (We had our Christmas dinner today). And enjoying the beautiful sunshine, which felt especially good as the sun has been a bit elusive lately.

{December 8: Simple pleasure}
December 8:  Simple pleasure
A few years ago I decided to start collecting snow globes. It is a simple thing that makes me happy. This guy was my first and is still my favorite. He's just so cute!

{December 9: Decoration}
December 9:  Decoration
One of my favorite decorations at Christmastime is our tree because having it up enables me to play more.

Just one of many decorated closed doors we saw today during our walk through Kraynak's Christmas decorations.

{December 11: Something red}

I loved the Snoopy lights in the Peanuts display yesterday while visiting Kraynak's. I would have bought some of these lights if they had any in stock. Snoopy and I go way back.

{December 12: Skyline}
December 12:  Skyline
This is the view out my front door ... my neighbor's mulberry tree. I love that tree. I think it has so much character.

{December 13: Much loved}
December 13:  Much loved
After thinking all day what I could take a photo of that is much loved, I finally decided on Honey. She's been our girl for almost 6 years (we adopted her in January when she was just a pup) and I couldn't imagine life without her.

Our 12th Week ~ 2014

Last week went by pretty quickly.  Sunday and Monday I recorded Keira and a classmate doing a presentation for science.  (That seems like so long ago now.)  Tuesday we had Bible study as usual in the morning, then in the evening Keira and I met with friends to get some cyber schooling information.  Keira had asked if we could look into the possibility.  Wednesday Honey went to the groomer for a couple hours.  She's always so soft and pretty when she comes home even though she's a nervous wreck while she's there.

Thursday Keira and I had our vision checked.  I was way overdue for an exam and she had been complaining of not being able to read the blackboard at school.  Friday I got my hair cut.  Just a trim.  Not donating yet.  It was also Doug's birthday, but we didn't really plan anything since he had come home from work early on Monday and stayed home Tuesday because he was sick.  We did manage to get rid of the kids for a few hours and watch a movie - Captain Phillips.  Good movie.  You should watch it if you haven't already.

Saturday was Alex's soccer game but he was really misbehaving on Friday night at the sitter's, so we didn't go.  He has spent quite a bit of time in his room since then.  Keira and I went to a bridal shower for one of the young women in our church Saturday afternoon.  It was a nice time.  Kudos to the ladies that planned it.  It went pretty quickly, despite all the gifts she got!  Then we ran in to pick up Keira's glasses that were ready already.  Mine aren't ready yet.

Anyway, onto some of the pics I took last week ...

DSC_6089
Keira doesn't usually wear green but she made an exception for St. Patrick's Day.  I had bought some green items for Wednesday's class at church.  The topic was about being green with envy like Joseph's brothers were with him.

DSC_6158
I hadn't captured the moon in a while, so I gave it a go the other night.  This photo isn't as sharp as I would like.  I will have to work on that.

DSC_6186
The calendar may say it is spring, but the weather says otherwise.  It has still been pretty cold with a nice day thrown in here and there just to tease us.  I decided to go buy some tulips to brighten things up a bit.  They make me smile every time I look at them.

Honey loves a good belly rub from Daddy.  :)

Our Frozen DVD/Blu-Ray came Tuesday morning.  Even though it didn't ship until late Monday afternoon.  Gotta love Amazon Prime.  :)  I've had several songs from the movie stuck in my head all week now.

Some of the other photos I took last week, I already showed in Sunday's Scavenger Hunt post.  Like Keira with her violin and with her new glasses.  Go check them out if you have a minute.

Thanks for stopping by!  I hope you have a great week!

Project 52 - Week 17

Another busy week has passed.  And another busy week awaits.  What is it about spring that makes my schedule get so filled up?  Today is the first day we have an extra person here with us in the mornings.  I am keeping a boy before school in the mornings until the end of the school year - about 6 weeks.  He's a very quiet, polite boy and seems to get along well with my boys already.

Last week, among other things, I went to Phipps Conservatory with my mom, visited with a friend at Panera, took Nick for his yearly check up, worked on invitations for our school's staff luncheon, had my butterfly photo featured on These Moments, and participated in the 30-Hour Famine that our church's Youth Group was doing.  And, in about hour 26 of fasting, I made cookies (one of my Scavenger Hunt finds) to be enjoyed after the benefit concert.  THAT was tough!  :)  But I'm very glad to have participated.  I will never again complain about having to fast for 12 hours before having blood work done again. :)

Anyway, here are a few photos from last week ...

Butterfly love
On Monday my mom and I visited Phipps Conservatory.  We had a wonderful time and can't wait to go back.  This is the photo that was featured on These Moments blog.

DSC_3231
The boys have been very eager to help out in the kitchen lately.  This particular day Alex was helping me make home made potato chips.

DSC_3247
Nick finds the strangest things.  Somewhere he found this HUGE remote control.  He thought we could use it so he brought it home.  I took his picture with it before it got thrown away.  :)  I don't keep other people's trash.

I helped Nick put together his new Star Wars blanket.  Photo by Keira.

grape hyacinths
These beautiful grape hyacinths are growing in our church's flower bed.

moon
I hadn't photographed the moon in a while so since it was clear the other night, I ventured out.  This was the night after the full moon.

So that is a taste of our week.  I hope to post my Project Life pages tomorrow.  As long as I get time to work on them today.

Thanks for stopping by!  Hope you have a great week!  We are expecting a butterfly any day now.  I'm excited to share photos of it with you!

Scavenger Hunt Sunday 08.05.12

Time for another Scavenger Hunt!  I wasn't sure I'd make this one, but I scrounged up some photos, even if they are a stretch.  I claim poetic license all the way!  :)
This week's items are Going back in time, Something just for me, Best part of my day, Night & day, and Look up.  And here are my interpretations ...

{going back in time}
going-back-in-time
I went back two years ago and found this photo from August 5, 2010.  Our first Monarch butterfly.  The one that started it all.  That summer we ended up successfully raising 34 Monarch butterflies!  Looking at this photo also reminds me of how much I've learned about photography and editing in the past two years.  Sheesh!

{something just for me}
something-just-for-me
At the lake the other day I was teaching a teenager from our church how to shoot in manual.  (She has the same camera I do.)  We were walking around looking for something other than scantily-clad people (who really shouldn't be) to photograph when this beauty happened by.  I believe God brought him our way just for me.  :)

{best part of my day}
best-part-of-my-day
While we had fun at the lake, probably the best part of my day was showing Alyssa how to shoot in manual.  I love teaching people how to turn that dial from Auto or P to M.  We probably both have this same photo on our cameras.  I'm still waiting for her to turn in her homework.  :)

{night & day}
night-and-day
Or in this case day & night.  :)

{look up}
look-up
Some of our sunflowers are nearly 10 feet tall!  You really have to look up to see them!

Thanks for stopping by!  I really hope to have time to visit blogs this week, but with PTO meetings, doctor visits, and school shopping, plus some fun stuff thrown in there, I may not make it by until later in the week.

Be sure to head over to Ashley's for more great Scavenger Hunt photos and to find out what to look for this week.  Make it a great week!
